100 Centidays

The Outer Void

Self-made scent of the outer space, ultrasound aroma diffuser, Video (no sound)

The Outer Void continues my exploration of the diversity of ways we perceive the environment besides visual information. This work juxtaposes the process of breathing with the aroma in outer space to questions our understanding of perception.
Every day, we breathe in and out about 22,000 times. The air we inhale is the container and carrier for the smell. It contains information for us to understand our surroundings, such as memories, emotions, food, humidity and air quality, etc. The video captures the invisible energy generated in the process of breathing.
As long as there is air, one cannot stop smelling. What does outer space smell like? The space is not an absolute vacuum, there may be some smell molecules staying in the void. The smell of outer space remains a mystery to our sensory except for the astronauts. I create a scent imagining the scent of outer space by analysing the interviews from Astronauts who have been on a spacewalk and interviews from people trying to imagine this particular smell. This work diffused this particular scent that summons faraway outer space to the hotel room. The scent is diffused across three hotel rooms, associating with the top, middle and base notes of perfume. The emission of aroma synchronizes with the video that mimics the breathing pattern.
The Outer Void combines the mysterious smell of outer space with the cosy hotel bedroom to challenges our understanding of smell and the relationship between fragrance and site.

Hui Gi Wai Echo / Hong Kong / 1996 born in Hong Kong, now living and working in Hong Kong

HUI Gi Wai Echo excels at the exploration of boundaries of senses and perception, especially sight and smell. Her recent works depart from the investigation of the limitation of vision using optics and illusion, and actively observe the relation between the smell and the inter-personal relationship. Her works meandering between art and science, producing works mostly in forms of light, chemicals, images and moving images. The perception and dynamics of viewers and installation work are mutually influencing each other. As such, Hui triggers conversations beyond the sense of vision via the creative medium dominated by vision, challenging the seen reality.

Echo currently lives and works in Hong Kong. She has graduated with BA(Hons) in Visual Arts, Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2019. Her works have been exhibited internationally in selected group exhibitions including Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition(Taipei, 2020 – 2021), Siggraph Asia 2020 (South Korea, 2020), IAM International Art Moves 2020 (Berlin, 2020), The Haunted (London, 2019), Zone Out (South Korea, 2019), Art Graduates Joint Exhibition 2019 (Hong Kong, 2019), and Photo Matters: Book and Print Festival 2016 (Hong Kong, 2016).

Rehearsal For Departure (To the day may inevitably come)《離開的演繹 (致那無可避免的一天)》
Immersive audio walk
2021

“Rehearsal For Departure (To the day may inevitably come)” (2021) is a 30-minute long immersive audio walk relating to the concept of departure. It extends from “Wish we could meet again soon” (2021), an experiential audio-guided tour collecting and telling different stories relating to the theme of parting, which took place in The Murray Hotel the last spring. Hotel, a place that people are paying for short-term lodging. Also, it is a space where departures are happening every minute, every hour, every day. People come to hotels for different reasons, but undoubtedly, every one of them has a destination. Fundamentally, hotels turn to be a transition point for people heading towards where they have to go.

Participants will listen to a pre-recorded audio while following designated “travellers” to walk through the rooms and floors in the hotel. Participants, being viewers to go along with “travellers” and listen to their monologue, getting a sense of complex feelings about the theme of departure. Every one of us may get to cope with it in one day.
